Hawa Mahal (“Palace of Winds”), is a palace situated in Jaipur, India.
Maharaja SawaiPratap Singh built the palace in 1799 and it was designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu God.
The unique five-storey exterior is similar to the honeycomb of the beehive. It has 953 small windows called Jharokhas that are decorated with intricate latticework. The lattice was mainly constructed for Royal Womens, for observing the daily life on the streets below without being seen as they had “purdah” (face cover) tradition.
The monument is built using Red and Pink sandstone. It is located in the heart of Jaipur’s business centre.
In 2005, restoration and renovation was taken into the act, after a long gap of 50 years. It costs INR 45679 lakhs for the reconstruction. It was later adopted by Unit Trust of India to maintain it.
